Zoom readthrough for the 2025 production
This year's production of scenes from Medieval Mystery Plays will take place from 4-6 December and will be drawn from the plays known as the N-Town cycle. We will be holding a Zoom read-through of the script on Monday 14 July at 7.30pm.

All are welcome, whether you are already familiar with the Medieval Mystery Plays that were performed in towns and cities across the country for hundreds of years until the Reformation, or are interested in the history of English drama and would like to know more. You can have a go at reading parts in the play, or just listen. Either way we hope to tempt some of you to audition for the show, or to join our backstage team. Auditions will take place on 18 and 28 August - keep an eye on our website and social media for details.
The fifteenth-century plays that go under the name ‘N. Town’ form an intriguing and varied collection. As well as more familiar biblically based episodes, the text includes some legendary material not represented in other surviving English medieval drama, in particular, scenes dealing with the conception and early life of the Virgin Mary and her betrothal to Joseph. We have included some of this material in our selection for this year’s production, alongside the better known scenes of the birth of Jesus at Bethlehem and the visit of the Shepherds. The action calls for some ingenious visual effects, the pace and tone vary from solemn and devotional to lively and irreverent, and the language ranges from formal to sharply colloquial or affectingly natural.
